Unrelated color folding greeting card illustrated by Hemard bound in before limitation leaf. Quarto (8-3/4" x 7"). Original publisher stiff printed color wrappers bound into contemporary morocco, raised bands and gilt title to spine (reading, incorrectly, "Code Civil"), top-edge gilt, deckle fore and bottom edges, wood-veneer pastedowns and free endpapers. Light fading to spine, minor wear to corners, light toning to interior, illustrations vivid. A handsome copy. $750. * From an edition limited to 900 copies, this number 338. Hemard presents the official text of the French Code Penal with witty, and often mildly erotic, color pochoir illustrations. It is a sequel to his Code Civil: Livre Premier, Des Personnes. In 1944 Hemard issued another legal work: Code General des Impots Directs et Taxes Assimilees. Hemard, a prolific artist, illustrator, designer and author, is best-known for his humorously illustrated editions of serious non-fiction books.
