Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana Die Handschrift ist zwischen 1570 und 1589 entstanden, und zwar entweder im Hochland von Mexiko selbst oder bereits in Italien, in diesem Fall �hnlich wie der in Paris befindliche Codex Telleriano Remensis als Kopie einer gemeinsamen Originalvorlage, die Robert H. Barlow als "Codex Huitzilopochtli" bezeichnet hat. W�hrend Codex Telleriano Remensis verschiedene Schreiberh�nde aufweist, ist Codex Vaticanus 3738 in einem einheitlichen Stil abgefa�t; nur er enth�lt die kosmogonisch-mythologischen und ethnographischen Abschnitte der hypothetischen Sammelhandschrift, welche die Vorlage darstellte, und sie bilden zweifellos den gr��ten Wert der Handschrift. Als Autor des italienischen Textes der im Original 101 Folien europ�ischen Papieres umfassenden Handschrift wird der anderweitig kaum bekannte Dominikaner Pedro de los R�os genannt, auf den die Bezeichnung CODEX R�OS zur�ckgeht. Da es sich nicht um ein vorkolumbisches Dokument handelt, von dem eine der Definition einer Faksimile-Reproduktion bis ins letzte Detail entsprechende Nachbildung des Originals bedeutsam gewesen w�re, mu�te das �bergro�e Format (ca. 46,5 x 29,5 cm - die Folios sind nicht alle gleich gro�) der Handschrift zur Vermeidung allzu hoher Kosten auf sieben Zehntel der Originalgr��e reduziert werden.
