Cold War Before the Outcome: 20 Real Decisions, What Was Known at the Time, and What Happened Next

THE OUTCOME IS KNOWN. THE DECISIONS WERE NOT.

Could the West stay in Berlin before anyone knew an airlift could sustain the city? Should the United States cross the 38th Parallel while Chinese intervention was still uncertain? When Soviet missiles appeared in Cuba, was quarantine a solution—or only the first decision?

Cold War Before the Outcome reconstructs twenty real decisions from Berlin in 1948 to German reunification in 1990 as they appeared before the results were known.

Thomas Norwick follows what decision-makers actually knew, what they believed, which alternatives remained usable, and where control ended and dependence on allies, opponents, institutions, logistics, and time began.

Across Korea, Suez, Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Reykjavik, East Germany, and more, familiar events look different when later outcomes are temporarily removed from view.

Not alternate history. Not a verdict written backward. A decision history of the Cold War before hindsight made the choices look inevitable.

Includes a Twenty Decisions at a Glance overview and four visual decision schematics.
