A handsome Victorian edition of the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772?1834), one of the central figures of English Romanticism and author of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan and Christabel.
This important collected edition was edited by Richard Herne Shepherd and was based upon Coleridge's final lifetime edition of 1834, while incorporating additional poems and variant readings from earlier editions and other sources. The edition was originally issued by Basil Montagu Pickering in four volumes in 1877 and was subsequently reissued by Macmillan.
The title page bears Pickering's attractive Aldine anchor-and-dolphin device, with the legend Aldi Discip. Anglus, a deliberate reference to the great Venetian printer Aldus Manutius and characteristic of the Pickering publishing tradition.
This is Volume II only of the four-volume set, containing 381 pages.
Of particular appeal is the binding: the volume has been handsomely bound in full brown tree calf, the boards with a striking natural flame/tree pattern and surrounded by an elaborate gilt decorative roll. The spine is divided by raised bands with gilt decoration and contrasting leather title and volume labels. It is a very attractive example of nineteenth-century decorative bookbinding.
Condition
Very Good for age.
Attractive full tree-calf binding with gilt decorative border to both boards and gilt-decorated spine. The calf has an appealing deep brown patina and pronounced tree/flame pattern. Some expected rubbing, surface marking and minor edge and corner wear consistent with a book approaching 150 years old. Gilt remains generally bright and attractive.
The boards appear securely attached and the binding presents well. Internally, the pages are generally clean and well preserved, with occasional light foxing and age-related spotting, particularly to the preliminary leaves, as visible in the photographs. Title page clean and clearly printed.
An attractive antiquarian copy, substantially enhanced by its handsome period-style calf binding.
