Handsome 5-volume set containing the most comprehensive collection to date of the writings of Sigmund Freud, some appearing here for the first time in English. Vol. 1: Early Papers on the History of the Psycho-Analytic Movement (1948 fourth impression [1924]), 359 pp.; Vol. II: Clinical Papers, Papers on Technique (1948 fifth impression [1924]), 404 pp.; Vol. III: Case Histories (1949 sixth impression [1925]), 607 pp.; Vol. IV: 1948 fourth impression [1925]), 508 pp.; Vol. V: Miscellaneous Papers, 1888-1938 (1950), 396 pp. For the most part, the papers are arranged chronologically to allow the reader to trace the evolution of Freud's thought this differs from order in earlier German publications. The papers range from Freud's earliest work on the history of psychoanalysis (1893) through accounts of applied psychoanalysis (1908-1923) & metapsychology (1911-1917), to his later life writings & ones that defy easy categorization. Freud's daughter, Anna, helped with much of the translation & had the final say in editing. For each selection, details are provided on the origin of each paper, translator's name, & associated notes, footnotes, & references. Each hardcover quarto has green silk cloth-covered boards lettered & ruled in bright gilt to spine. Condition is Fine on Vols. I-IV, Near Fine on Vol. V, downgraded due to fading across top 2" of front board. Else, all are completely clean & bright, bindings strong & straight, pages creamy white & unmarked save for former owner's bookplate inside all front covers. Hinges secure, corners crisp with slight bumping to one or both tips of all spines No DJs, as issued.
