Item description from seller

Signed by the author's son to "George Shepperson for whom my mother would have taken great pleasure in inscribing this book". It also includes a letter of explanation. Professor Shepperson was an historian of all "things African" including The Slave Trade. Elma as the granddaughter of slaves writes with clarity about the complexity of the human condition. She employs irony across the poetic traditions found in this two volume collection of 187 poems made up of The Big Gate and Ribbons and Lace.
