A collection of Henry Hallam's three major historical works. Consisting of the complete three volumes of his Constitutional History of England and A View of The State of Europe During The Middle Ages as well as four volumes of his Introduction to Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. This set is the ninth edition of Constitutional History, the sixth edition of Literature and the twelfth edition of Middle Ages. Collated, complete. Henry Hallam was a barrister before he formed his historical writing career. His first published book was his View of the State of Europe During The Middle Ages which he described himself as a series of historical dissertations from the 5th to the 15th century. To this work he gives the history of several empires and countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Germany in addition to the Greek and Saracenic empires. Hallam also reflects on the social history of medieval times through discussions on the feudal, the ecclesiastical and political systems of England. Hallam's Constitutional History of England is a continuation from the end of his Middle Ages, starting with the accession of Henry VII. His constitutional history ends with the accession of George III as Hallam was apprehensive with involving his works in contemporary politics, in case of an accusation of bias. His Introduction to the Literature of Europe continues a topic briefly broached in his Middle Ages. The work gives an analysis of the state of literature from the Middle Ages to the Seventeenth Century. The work begins with an introductory overview sketching the state of literature in Europe to the end of the fourteenth century. He mentions the extinction of ancient learning after the fall of the Roman empire, and the rise of Christianity. Hallam also reviews classical learning and the works produced at this time. For each time period the work has separate chapters on literature, theology, science, speculative philosophy and jurisprudence. In uniform calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the spines, joints and extremities. Some marks to boards also, particularly heavy to volume IV of Introduction to Literature. Loss to spine label of volume I of Middle ages. Lacking spine label to volume III of Literature of Europe. Front hinge volume I of Middle Ages is slightly strained but firm. Small crack to head of front joint to volume II of Literature. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with spotting to the endpapers and in some cases the first and last few pages. The odd spot throughout. Very Good.
