The turn of the century was a time of exciting experiments in the arts. Tradition was cast aside as artists sought a new freedom of expression. Out of the turmoil came emerged the Art Nouveau 'New Art ' movement, which rapidly became a fashionable international style. It was, however, short lived for the elegant, flowing lines of art Nouveau soon gave way to modern functionalism.
