Date uncertain (no title or copyright pages present - circa late 18th century) . Considerable edgewear to the first 10 plates affecting engravings in Plates 1 & 2, and margins only in Plates 3 - 10. Also, much loss to Plate XVI (last plate in book). The remaining 161 plates are in very good condition. Previous owner's name/date penned on front pastedown. Light edgewear and fading to boards ; In French. Hardback (red leather spine/red cloth boards), ribbon marker, edges dyed red. Work of prolific French engraver, Bernard Direxit. Includes 172 original eighteenth century engravings (many double-paged, some foldout) depicting all aspects of the French marine industry. Includes highly detailed representations of ship construction plans, construction at all stages, rigging, tackle, docking facilities, ship building machinery, etc. Appears this collection was bound (rebound? ) in late 19th or early 20th century.
