Synopsis
This collection presents all the ecclesiastical laws, canons, answers, and rescripts, along with other memorials concerning the government, discipline, and worship of the Church of England, published in Latin and accompanied by explanatory notes by J. Johnson. It features a 19th-century English translation of the Church of England’s ancient canons, laws, and memorials, spanning from late antiquity through the Reformation, enriched with extensive editorial notes. The translator/editor aims to provide English readers with insights into the English church’s governance, discipline, and worship by compiling public memorials originally published in Latin or Saxon, supplemented by explanatory notes derived from notable sources. Corrections and emendations are informed by newer manuscript evidence and comparisons with historical texts. An extensive apparatus—including prefaces, advertisements, notes on dating and transcription, and a plan to publish a comprehensive corpus of ancient canons and laws in English—frames the work. Thematic elements include anti-popery polemic, primitivist church worship, and the assertion of ancient and inherent ecclesiastical jurisdiction. This is Volume I, Part 1 of 4, in a two-volume English edition.
