A Collection of Facts: History of the Rise, Difficulties & Suspension of Antioch College

A Collection Of Facts: History Of The Rise, Difficulties & Suspension Of Antioch College by Ira W. Allen presents a combative, documentary account of Antioch College’s early crises in Yellow Springs, Ohio, during the 1850s. The text centers on governance, funding, and denominational control, tracing how Horace Mann and allied leaders championed a Joint Stock Company model while Christian founders pressed for a broad, democratic endowment and church?run oversight. Through letters, editorials, conference resolutions, and minutes, the work portrays a power struggle among Mann, A. S. Dean, Eli Fay, and local church figures, culminating in pew sales, disputes over residency rules, and the formation of a Second Christian Church that displaced the First Christian Church. The narrative contrasts alleged self?interested manipulation with appeals to principled denominational loyalty, presenting a vivid, source?driven chronicle of a 19th?century clash between democracy in education and ecclesiastical authority. Part I emphasizes the integrity and grass?roots aims of the Christian founders and documents how governance and endowment debates redirected the college’s destiny.
