Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library (Volume I)

The Illinois frontier was not silent; it left a paper trail. Hear the frontier speak plainly. This first volume of the Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library, edited by H.W. Beckwith, draws you into the raw materials of a state coming into focus: the records, recollections, and testimony that shaped public memory before it was polished into legend. Created as a historical documents collection and state archives reference, it reads as a primary source anthology for anyone drawn to Illinois frontier history, the Illinois statehood era, and the lived realities behind pioneer settlement narratives. These pages carry the texture of 19th century Illinois and the wider currents of American Midwest history, gathered in a local history compilation with the authority of a state historical society series. For scholars it serves as an academic history reference; for family historians it is a steady genealogy research source, rich in context and names that connect places to people. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
