The full title explains the rationale behind this rare publication: A Collection of Original Pieces, In Prose and Verse. (Published on behalf of the Widow and Orphans of the late Thomas Robinson, formerly of Bigby, etc).

The book contains a list of subscribers (for over 90 copies in total) - including ten copies for the Right Hon. Earl Yarborough; to whom the book is dedicated ('utmost deference and respect' etc etc by 'humble Servant' John Robinson, Barnetby, October 1840.

The book starts with an account of a dinner in celebration of Earl Yarborough's birthday (August 8th, 1840) - lots of toasts - to the Queen, Prince Albert etc and further references, in the manner of the dedication, to his lordship's 'kind, hospitable and generous character.'

This is for the most part followed by a series of poems, commencing with The Oxonian (What is it woman cannot do?) and ending (other than a short dedication to a Mr, Charles Marcuard, R. A. S.) with The Maniac : A Poem.

CONDITION - assessed as POOR - mainly because, while the book is physically intact, the binding is very loose in places; revealing a lot of the binding material. Also, page 7/8 (located in The Dinner section, previously cited) has completely detached. See relevant image.

Quarter bound - with the cloth elements very frayed (image) and the remaining parts rubbed/marked in places.

Internally, the pages are generally very tanned with occasional spotting - the more so on the book's preliminary and final pages. Generally, the text is legible; with the text remaining clean and crisp.

(It looks and feels like a very, very old book - perhaps even beyond its actual age - but, arguably, in an appealing rather than negative way).
