Collection of 29 Original Watercolors of Tableware Designs for Noritake Approx. range of 6 x 10 ½ to 6 x 11 ½ Painted in watercolor, gold gouache, and graphite on cream paper No binding Japan, ca. 1880-1910 A collection of designs by an unknown artist made for Noritake. Created in Japan, 1880-1910, this collection includes 28 pieces that can be broken down into designs for 15 plates, 8 trays, 2 pitchers, 2 vases, and 1 teacup. Each piece includes some markings stamped on, most likely for identification purposes, as either lettering, numbering, or a combination of both. Designs for the tableware are mostly floral, but also range from simple rings that wrap the edge of a plate, to intricate windmills or vegetation. Noritake was initially established in New York in 1876 as a trading company that imported chinaware, paper lanterns, etc. In 1904 the beginnings of the Noritake Company known today was established in the village of Noritake, a suburb near Nagoya, Japan. Their early tableware was mostly hand painted, adorned with copious amounts of gold, and their first porcelain dinner plate which satisfied the Noritake Company was created and exported in 1914.
