Album of Photographs Documenting the USS Champlain and the Recovery of Alan Shepard, Mercury-Redstone 3 Mission, May 1961A remarkable photographic record compiled by crew member George Clay Whitt of the USS Champlain (CVS-39), documenting America s first manned space flight and the ship s role in recovering astronaut Alan Shepard and the Freedom 7 capsule following the historic Mercury-Redstone 3 mission on May 5, 1961. The album is notable for juxtaposing personal snapshots by Whitt (including several rare color views) with a more extensive series of professional photograph prints by government photographers. These latter were gifted to sailors on board the Champlain in lieu of returning confiscated images that government censors considered too sensitive for the general public. The Mercury-Redstone 3 mission marked a defining moment in the American space program: Alan Shepard became the first American in space, piloting Freedom 7 for a 15-minute suborbital flight that demonstrated the viability of human spaceflight and positioned the United States to compete directly with the Soviet Union in the emerging Space Race. President John F. Kennedy would announce the Apollo program s goal of landing a man on the moon less than three weeks later, making Shepard s flight a symbolic and technical turning point. The recovery of astronaut and capsule at sea was a crucial component of NASA s operational testing, entrusted to the aircraft carrier USS Champlain, which served as the designated prime recovery ship.Contents of the AlbumThe photographs begin with shipboard snapshots of Whitt himself as well as photographs of diplomas and medals awarded to Shepard in 1961. The first space related images come from Cape Canaveral, showing Shepard preparing the night before the mission, being assisted into his pressure suit, and scenes of the launch itself, including lift-off and several images from space. These early views set the stage for the principal focus of the album: the Champlain s recovery operations.A detailed sequence captures the carrier s preparations for the return, including clearing and readying the flight deck. Photographs then show a helicopter lifting off to retrieve Shepard and the Freedom 7 capsule from the Atlantic. Separate frames document Shepard being hoisted from the sea and the capsule being secured, followed by both being landed aboard the Champlain.Several color snapshots are noteworthy as they are clearly snapshots made by Whitt or a fellow sailor that had somehow cleared government censors. A series of candid images follows Shepard s movements aboard ship: his disembarkation from the helicopter, walk across the flight deck, arrival in sick bay, and the removal of his suit and biomedical instrumentation for medical examination. Additional photographs show his return to the flight deck, recovery of his helmet from the capsule, his meeting with reporters, and his eventual departure by helicopter from the carrier. The album concludes with images of the crew examining the Freedom 7 spacecraft. Particularly notable are views of the ship s executive officer climbing into the small capsule and posing inside, providing a rare perspective on the interior .…
