Full-Leather. Condition: Good. Repriint. Later edition from 1775 in six volumes: I (335pp), II (336pp), III (351pp), IV (361pp), V (336pp) and VI (336pp). The first three volumes were originally published as a set in 1748 with all six volumes first being published in 1758. Contemporary full leather binding. The title panel is partially present for only the fifth volume. The volume numbers are stamped on the spines. The spines have a little chipping at the tops and bottoms and a little cracking to the edges. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Name of a previous owner in ink to the front free endpaper of five volumes - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge. The front free endpaper of volume II is missing so her name is on the half-title page of that volume. There is the bookplate of another family member on the front pastedowns. Browning and some spotting to the endpapers. Volume I has some spotting to the title page. Volumes II, IV and V have some creasing to corners in places. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in places but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. Coming from very humble beginnings in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with the help of Alexander Pope and others he became one of the foremost publishers of the day. He is probably best remembered for the book offered here and his ' Select Collection of Old Plays,12 vols., 1744.
