A Collection of State Papers: Relative to the War Against France Now Carrying on by Great-Britain and the Several Other European Powers

A Collection Of State Papers: Relative To The War Against France Now Carrying On By Great-Britain And The Several Other European Powers". This late-18th-century British government publication assembles the sovereign’s address to Parliament, loyal addresses from both Houses praising naval and military successes, and an extensive appendix of Admiralty dispatches documenting engagements with French, Dutch, and Spanish forces during the ongoing wars (1797–1798). The collection presents the official war narrative and a primary-source archive of naval operations, privateer actions, casualty lists, prizes, and transatlantic diplomacy. It foregrounds national resilience, public credit, and fiscal resolve to sustain a prolonged war, while justifying wartime measures and rallying political support for supplies and policy. In addition to the British materials, the work aggregates late-1790s state papers and diplomatic correspondence, including reports from American envoys in Paris regarding neutrality, negotiations with the French Directory, and contemporaneous discussions of treaties, loans, and contraband, illustrating the global scale of Revolutionary and Napoleonic-era diplomacy and warfare. Together, the volume serves as both a propagandistic morale booster and a documentary archive for historians.
