Binding copy. From a theological library, with their library label on the lower spine, and blindstamp to the title page and a few other pages. In period, full leather boards, with the rubbed spine having chipping to the ends and chippng to the spine label. The four tracts in this volume are: (1) by John Plaifere, "An Appeal to the Gospel, for the true doctrine of Divine Predestination.", pages 1-222; (2) by Chr. Potter, "A Letter of the Learned Chr. Potter, D.D. Dean of Windsor. Vindicating His Sentiments Touching The Predestinarian Controversies"; pages 225-246; (3) by Laurence Womock, "The Examination of Tilenus Before the Triers, In order to his intended Settlement in the Office of a Public Preacher, in the Common-wealth of Utopia", pages 249-355; (4) by Thomas Goad, "A Disputation, Partly Theological, Partly Metaphysical, Concerning the Necessity and Contingency of Events in the World.etc.", pages 359-392. Pagination: 2 frontpapers, (blank), frontispiece illustration, Title page, (blank), 19 pages of Prefaces, (blank), 392 pages main text, 6 pages Index, 2 endpapers. The first frontpaper and the second endpaper are detached, with both frontpapers having copious scholarly notes about the book and the editors. The inner cover has the inked note about where to find the index to the tracts. The upper right corner of the second frontpaper has the inscription of "Henry John Rose, B.D. / Fellow of St. Johns Coll. Cambridge". The minister notes that he was the brother of Hugh James Rose, and that Henry aided in the Ency. Britannica. The top margin of the title page has the inscription of the minister and his note that the book is autographed by Henry John Rose and by E. G. Thorpe, another early owner.
