Item description from seller
Collection of two original billheads (credit memoranda) printed in black and red ink on light beige paper. Each memorandum also includes handwriting in black ink. Datelined September 21 and October 16, 1896 in Sacramento, California. 8 1/2" x 7." Billheads are very clean and intact overall except for light age toning, a few horizontal and vertical fold lines, slight wrinkling, and a few pinholes at top. Very Good copies. Two original billheads (credit memoranda) from Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson of Sacramento, California to J. [W.?] Lambert. The September memorandum has one line item described in part as "1 Doz. Fibre [Haled?] Brushes." The October memorandum has eight line items with numerical figures and "wire" in their descriptions. Numerical figures are in the right columns on both memoranda. The printed header on each memorandum reads, "In Account with Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson, 221 and 223 J Street, between Second and Third." Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson was a hardware company founded by Charles Holbrook, John Merrill, and James B. Stetson. Holbrook and Merrill originally came from New Hampshire and Maine, respectively, and began work in Sacramento. Stetson had his own company called James B. Stetson & Company which merged in 1878 with Holbrook, Merrill & Company to form Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson as an incorporation in 1882. Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson eventually became one of the most prominent hardware stores in San Francisco and Sacramento and remained in business until the 1950s.
