El Sabio Books Inc. was founded in Calgary by David and Sean O?Neil, a partnership built on a shared fascination with history, philosophy, and the written word. Our journey began when a visit to a local antiquarian bookshop led to the discovery of a remarkable collection: a bulk lot of sixteenth to eighteenth century volumes found in a modest house in Humboldt, Minnesota, a quiet rural town far from any major center of the book trade. When offered the chance to see them, we found a beautiful compilation of survivors of centuries past.
The idea that such a trove of knowledge and craftsmanship had resurfaced in a small Midwestern town was astonishing. When Aquila Books offered the collection for sale as a single lot, we recognized the opportunity and decided to purchase it together. If that chance had not been offered, El Sabio Books would never have begun. That decision marked the start of a family enterprise devoted to preserving and sharing the intellectual and artistic legacy contained in these works.
With the generous guidance and early support of Aquila Books, one of Canada?s leading antiquarian booksellers, and the technical assistance of Bibliopolis, El Sabio Books took shape around a clear mission: to safeguard the words that have shaped civilization. We believe the words written in these books are history itself, fixed, enduring, and immune to revision. They stand as the unaltered record of human thought. Our purpose is to act as custodians of that word, protecting and presenting it with the respect it deserves, because within it lies the foundation of knowledge and truth that connects all generations.
