About the Author
John Gardner is a visionary educator, author, speaker, and change agent. He founded the acclaimed National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina. He served as the faculty director of USC's first-year seminar, University 101, from 1974 to 1999. Gardner conducts First-Year Experience seminars and teleconferences throughout the world, supporting college faculty and staff in developing effective first-year seminar courses and retention programs. In 1999, he worked to create the Policy Center on the First Year of College, supported by The Atlantic Philanthropies and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
