Synopsis:

This book ... describes how universal writing problems have been dealt with by experienced writers, and it explains how the mistakes commonly made by novice writers can be avoided. The book is organized to be as practical as possible. It outlines the general principles of writing and then moves on to specific problems that writers encounter. Chapters 1-4 discuss the fundamental elements in a piece of creative writing-theme, setting, characters, and plot. Chapters 5-11 deal with the basic techniques for handling point of view, tone, description, dialogue, time, and imagery. Chapters 12 and 13 go over the mechanics of manuscript preparation and present a brief review of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Finally, Chapter 14 looks at writing as a career and offers suggestions on such things as marketing, inquiries, and agents. [Cont. in TofC].

About the Author: Robert DeMaria received his PhD in Modern British Literature at Columbia University. He has directed writing programs in several universities and was an editor at Macmillan. The bulk of his creative work consists of his 20 novels, but he has also published poetry, an off-Broadway play, and a libretto for an opera. For several years he was the academic dean of the New School for Social Research. He was also the director of an overseas program for American students and writers in residence. His work has been highly praised in publications such as THE LONDON TIMES, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE BOSTON GLOBE, THE WASHINGTON POST, and many literary magazines. He and his family now divide their time between Long Island and a house in Mallorca, Spain. His latest novel is BLEECKER STREET BLUES, set in Greenwich Village.
