Item description from seller

Originally published in London in 1829, Griffin (1803-1840) tells "a tale of crime and punishment which draws heavily on hs Limerick childhood and his familiarity with Irish Catholic society". though set in the 1770's, the story is based on murder in Limerick in 1819. Praised highly by contemporaries such as Maria Edgeworth and Lady Morgan. Boucicault used the story for his Colleen Bawn. The name of one of the characters, Myles na Coppaleen, was adopted later as a nom de plume by another Irish writer. A well printed and produced copy of what is seen as the best Irish novel of the nineteenth century. Small price mark in pen on front free end paper.
