A moving, authoritative portrait of a soldier-poet and public servant.
This memorial presents the life, service, and enduring influence of Colonel Peter A. Porter, drawing a clear line from family heritage to battlefield duty and civic leadership. It offers a balanced view of a man whose character shaped his era and the nation he served.
Set against the backdrop of the Civil War era, the work traces Porter’s roots from his New York origins to his role in the War of 1812 lineage, and onward to his own public life. It blends personal anecdotes with historical context, highlighting his devotion to duty, his steady judgment, and his contributions to the country during a time of crisis. The narrative also touches on his artistic interests and the esteem in which his contemporaries held him.
Readers will encounter a portrait of a dedicated soldier, a thoughtful leader, and a man whose legacy extends beyond battles to affect literature, history, and national memory. The text respects Porter’s memory while grounding his achievements in concrete details and memorable moments.
- Crafted as a formal memorial delivered before The Century, dated to December 1864.
- Traces Porter’s life, family background, and military service with clear, respectful narration.
- Illustrates the intersection of public duty and personal character in a formative American era.
- Offers context for readers of Civil War history, biographical study, and American memory.
Ideal for readers of Civil War history, presidential and military biographical works, and those seeking a thoughtful tribute to a notable American figure.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
