530 P. Pages permanent slightly bronzy Pages sometimes a bit shop-soiled. Last page also a bit blotchy and with a pencil notice. Adapted from the contents: In this astute analysis of his nnative country, Senhor Prado indicates that the first requirement for an understanding of present-day Brazil is a rigorous inquiry into the formative colonial period and, more particulary, into the situationthat existed on the verge of independence. At that time, there came into question not only the regime of colonial subordination but the whole complex of institutions, which had become ripe for changes of a profound order. By concentraiting on the beginning of the nineteenth century, when colonial institutions had ehausted teir potential for development and were proving inadequate to handlethe economic and social problems of the country, Prado exposes the rootsof the conflicts that beset contemporary Brazil.
