Particular attention was paid to the views of Clifford Geertz, as expressed in his essay on Agricultural Involution . In that essay the lack of "Development" of Javanese Agriculture was pointed out to be the result of the particular form of colonial government and economic activity, in combination with indigenous social norms and wet rice cultivation.
