The Colored Cadet At West Point

A first-person account of military training and institutional life, documenting the experience of the first African American cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Henry Ossian Flipper recounts his years at the academy with attention to both formal instruction and the social conditions that shaped his experience, offering a detailed record of discipline, isolation, and perseverance.

The narrative proceeds with clarity and restraint, describing the structure of cadet life alongside the challenges imposed by exclusion and hostility. Flipper's account emphasizes conduct, endurance, and professional commitment, situating his personal experience within a broader institutional framework. The tone remains measured, allowing events to carry their own weight without overt commentary.

Positioned within the historical context of the post-Civil War United States, the work provides insight into both military education and the evolving status of African Americans in public institutions. It stands as a primary document of lived experience, contributing to the historical record through direct observation and reflection.
