Not Colored
A Historical Novel by Crystal Jackson

She was Black. She was a woman. And in 1945, she stepped into a world where neither was expected to belong.

Inspired by an extraordinary family history, Not Colored follows Veda James, a remarkable African American woman whose life unfolds against some of the most turbulent decades in twentieth-century America.

Born during the Spanish Flu pandemic and descended from a family only generations removed from slavery, Veda grows up in a country defined by rigid racial boundaries. But her intelligence, determination, and extraordinary photographic memory will take her somewhere few women—and even fewer Black women—had gone before.

In 1945, Veda becomes the first woman to work in the Los Angeles Police Department's Detective Division.

It is a groundbreaking opportunity that changes her life.

Her remarkable memory makes her invaluable in the investigation of major crimes. Faces, rooms, evidence, and crime scenes remain fixed in her mind with astonishing clarity. But the gift that helps her succeed becomes a torment she cannot escape. The horrific images she witnesses follow her home, invade her dreams, and slowly pull her toward alcohol, pills, and a private struggle hidden behind her professional strength.

Against a backdrop of racism, sexism, family, relationships, motherhood, crime, and a rapidly changing Los Angeles, Veda must navigate a society determined to define people by the color of their skin.

Crystal Jackson weaves one woman's intimate story into the larger history of Black America, connecting generations touched by slavery, racial violence, discrimination, and the continuing struggle to cross boundaries once considered impossible.

Enriched by vintage family photographs, historical news clippings, and rare Los Angeles Police Department documents from the 1940s through the 1960s, Not Colored blurs the line between family history and historical fiction, giving readers an unusually personal window into a remarkable era.

How do you live without seeing color when the world refuses to stop seeing yours?

Not Colored is a powerful story of race, courage, ambition, memory, addiction, family, and survival—and of one African American woman who dared to enter a world that was never designed to let her in.
