Presents a scientific introduction to unseen but vital aspects of our lives, such as gases, energy, atoms, intelligence, and dreams.
From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 A unique introduction to a wide spectrum of unseen forces in our universe, our environment and within our own bodies. The first section about matter discusses molecular structure and its relationship to gases, liquids and solids. The brief text and numerous diagrams of this large-format book also give a clear explanation of the Earth's water cycle and oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide exchanges. Energy and force are discussed in the second section. It also includes nuclear energy, magnetism, chemical changes and the production of energy in plants and animals. This is followed by a section on brain waves, sleep, intelligence, instinct and some controversial powers of the human mind: telepathy and psychokinesis. The clearly written text and numerous color photographs and diagrams make this a handsome, entertaining introduction to some of the hidden forces in our world. However, because the subjects covered are so diverse and coverage is so brief, the book will not be useful for research. Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, Oreg.
