Botanical. Color offset lithograph. Page measures 23" x 20". Signature in pencil in the lower right corner, numbered 53/500. The Columbine is a light pink tulip with subtle variations in color and is depicted as just on the verge of opening. This color lithograph features lavishly textured petals and a virtuosic understanding of light and shadow. Rory McEwen (1932 - 1982) was an artist and musician born in Scotland. He studied at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge and later settled in London. He began painting flowers when he was eight. He went on to become a musician and performer and a regular on the BBC's 'Tonight' eventually hosting 'Hallabaloo', a folk, blues and alternative music show. From 1964, McEwen shifted focus on his visual art career, developing his distinctive style. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in several museum collections, including the Tate in London. These wonderful Old English Tulip lithographs are rendered with scientific detail combined with a contemporary lightness and flair.
