Los Comentarios reales fueron escritos a partir de los recuerdos del Inca Garcilaso de la Vega y de sus vivencias en el Cuzco. Los Comentarios reales pretenden preservar la memoria hist�rica y las tradiciones de la civilizaci�n andina en el territorio del Per�. Tambi�n explican c�mo se conform� la identidad mestiza de los nacidos del cruce entre los conquistadores y la nobleza inca. La obra se compone de 9 libros con 268 cap�tulos y trata sobre la historia, las costumbres y las tradiciones del Antiguo Per�, aunque centr�ndose en el periodo inca. En esta primera parte se agrupan los libros del 1 al 5, publicados en 1609, en Lisboa. Este volumen empieza siguiendo las pautas de los historiadores de entonces con una descripci�n f�sica del mundo y la explicaci�n de la divisi�n entre "Viejo" y "Nuevo Mundo". Relata las condiciones climatol�gicas del Per�, el origen del nombre del Per�, explica la leyenda de Manco C�pac y Mama Ocllo y la fundaci�n del imperio inca. La intenci�n del autor era reconstruir y comentar los hechos, creencias y costumbres del pueblo incaico recogidos por �l a trav�s de la transmisi�n oral, de la lectura o de su experiencia personal. Al mencionar a los historiadores espa�oles afirma: "... mi intenci�n no es contradecirles, sino servirles de comento y glosa". El autor titul� a su obra Comentarios reales, porque consideraba su testimonio como el m�s veraz, diferenci�ndose as� de los cronistas espa�oles. El autor descend�a de los antiguos gobernantes peruanos y por ello conoc�a a cabalidad la lengua quechua.
