The Eye of a Naturalist. The Heart of a Pastor.

Harold E. Kohn had a gift for seeing meaning in things others might pass by. Birds, wildlife, plants, weather, water, woods, and the turning seasons became starting points for reflections on faith, purpose, perseverance, suffering, and hope.

That perspective grew from a lifetime of close observation. Kohn was not simply a writer who enjoyed the outdoors; his daughter described him as a true naturalist—curious, attentive, and eager to understand what he saw. At Hidden Brook, his family’s wooded retreat, he found a place to slow down, observe the created world, and reflect on the deeper meaning of life.

Originally published decades ago as Feeling Low?, this timeless collection has been extensively edited and updated for today’s reader, with Harold’s original illustrations carefully digitized for this new edition. The result preserves the warmth and wisdom of his original work while introducing it to a new generation.

Comfort from Creation makes a meaningful Christian gift for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, friends walking through grief or hardship, or anyone who appreciates thoughtful writing about faith, nature, and life.

About Harold E. Kohn

His life was shaped by suffering. His eye was drawn to creation. His words still offer comfort.

Harold E. Kohn was a pastor, counselor, naturalist, artist, and poet who spent a lifetime observing both the beauty of creation and the struggles people carry. A lifelong student of the natural world, he delighted in noticing the details others might overlook—from birds and wildlife to plants, weather, and the changing seasons—and sharing what they revealed about life and faith.

Kohn also knew suffering personally. Through serious illness, chronic pain, and loss, he developed a deep compassion for others that shaped decades of pastoral ministry and counseling. His years of ministry, illness, sorrow, and encounters with human need deepened his understanding and compassion for people.

His artistic life was equally serious. Kohn’s work appeared in numerous publications, he worked professionally as an artist, and his original nature illustrations became an important part of the books he wrote.

His warm prose and original illustrations bring all of those worlds together, finding enduring lessons of faith, hope, and comfort in the ordinary wonders of creation.
