Kenneth Allard is a former U.S. Army Colonel widely known to national audiences. Entering military service as a draftee, his unique career included overseas service as a Cold War intelligence officer and assignments as an assistant professor at West Point, special assistant to the Army Chief of Staff, and Dean of Students at the National War College. For more than a decade, he was a featured military analyst on the networks of NBC News, particularly MSNBC and CNBC. That experience provided the backdrop for his most recent book, Warheads: Cable News and the Fog of War. His other books include Command, Control and the Common Defense, winner of the 1991 National Security Book Award. Colonel Allard holds a doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy and an MPA from Harvard University. His numerous military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two awards of the Legion of Merit and the NATO Expeditionary Medal for service in Bosnia. This was produced by the Center for Advanced Concepts and Technology, of the Directorate of Advanced Concepts, Technologies, and Information Strategies, of the Institute for National Strategic Studies of the National Defense University. Provides a historical perspective on a contemporary problem. Deals with the problems embodied in the tradition of service separatism in the American military establishment. Discusses the elements contributing to separate service identities and how these elements have affected interservice relationships. Addresses the technological choices made in modernizing the command and control systems used by the armed forces of the United States.
