America, either as it resembles or differs from, or illustrates the law of England on this important subject of jurisprudence.

The extensive and uninterrupted intercourse which now happily subsists between Great Britain and other nations of the world, and the questions of foreign law which are continually brought before the Judicial Committee on Appeals from those British West India Colonies which retain the laws of France, Holland, and Spain, would seem to render an acquaintance with general jurisprudence indispensable, for the mere pur pose of enabling the Advocate to answer the calls which would be made upon him for his professional services. But even without this professional motive for its acquisition, it is, and must be an essential part of legal education, if it be really intended to supply the student with those attainments which will adequately qualify him for his Profession, and render the success of its exercise dependent on himself and on the extent of his attainments, and wholly independent of all adventitious and extrinsic advantages.

The Civil Law has had so extensive an influence upon every judicial system in Europe, and such is its own intrinsic excellence, that the student can take no step in the study of any particular system of juris prudence without feeling the necessity of directing his attention to it. He finds that every system of juris prudence has copiously drawn from that rich source.
