A Commentary on the New Testament, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint)

Paul’s letter to Rome opens a window on how the gospel connects Judaism and the world, and what this means for faith in Christ.

This edition guides readers through Weiss’s look at Romans 1:5–11, where Paul explains that the gospel is not foreign to Jewish prophecy but fulfills it. The author traces how Jesus, born of David’s line, is exalted as the Son of God and given authority as the world’s mediator. The discussion also covers Paul’s commission to preach to the Gentiles and his desire to visit Rome to strengthen believers there.

• How the gospel is presented as a fulfillment of Old Testament promises.
• Why the mission extends beyond Jews to include Gentiles and nations.
• Paul’s personal motive: gratitude, prayer, and a plan to share grace with Rome.
• Theological themes such as the Son of God, resurrection, and Christ’s role as mediator.

Ideal for readers of biblical commentary and students seeking context for Romans and early Christian mission.

Bernhard Weiss is associate professor of philosophy at the University of Cape Town.
