Commodore 64 Full Game in Assembly Language - Starbraze C64

Create an original Commodore 64 game—and discover how to make it your own.

There is a special satisfaction in watching a spacecraft move across the screen because of code you understand. Starbraze brings that experience to your keyboard with a practical, step-by-step guide to building a complete space shooter in assembly language.

Starting with a working screen, you will develop the game through playable milestones. Each chapter connects the code to a visible result, explains the decisions behind it and shows how to test your changes. Along the way, a simple scene becomes a mission with responsive controls, enemy patrols, a final opponent and selectable audio.

Inside this volume, you will learn how to:

• Set up your development workflow and build and run the game using 64tass and the VICE emulator.
• Create sprites, read joystick input and implement movement within defined boundaries.
• Add player weapons, enemy waves and collision detection.
• Track scores, lives and temporary protection.
• Introduce a boss encounter, victory and defeat conditions, and an internal restart.
• Add SID music and sound effects with an opening audio selection.
• Inspect game state, troubleshoot problems and verify the results of your experiments.

Understand the code, then personalize the game.

Customization is part of the learning process throughout the book. Guided experiments explain how to change graphics, movement, firing behavior, difficulty and audio settings. You will learn which values can be adjusted, which systems depend on them and what to check after rebuilding.

Color illustrations, screenshots captured from the running game, readable code listings and a technical glossary support the explanations. The presentation draws on the character of classic computer manuals while keeping the focus on practical learning.

One series. A complete, independent game in every volume.

Starbraze is Volume 1 of the C64 Game Manual Series, a monthly collection of hands-on game-development books. Every volume will introduce an original, customizable game and a self-contained learning project. The books can be read independently: you do not need to own another volume to build and complete the game presented here.

Written for retrocomputing enthusiasts, hobby programmers and readers approaching C64 assembly through a concrete project, Starbraze celebrates a machine whose distinctive graphics and SID sound still reward imagination.

Build the mission described in these pages, understand how it works, and start shaping your own version.
