Our Common Fruits: a Descriptive Account of Those Ordinarily Cultivated or Consumed in Great Britain

Our Common Fruits: A Descriptive Account Of Those Ordinarily Cultivated Or Consumed In Great Britain by William Bayle Bernard is a 19th-century work that offers accessible descriptions of the fruits commonly grown or consumed in Great Britain. The text covers a broad range of fruits—from apples, pears, and quinces to medlars, plums, cherries, peaches, dates, grapes, gooseberries, currants, nuts, and the pineapple—providing information on their origins, cultivation, varieties, and culinary uses. Interlaced with historical anecdotes, botanical notes, and practical guidance, the book aims to explain the structure, growth, and introduction of fruits without technical jargon, while highlighting cultural and economic aspects of pomology. It includes introductory chapters on the nature of pomology, classification difficulties, and methods of cultivation, accompanied by discussions of fruit in art and literature.
