About this title

Synopsis

Experience a novel unlike any other. Graham Leo's Our Common Life weaves together the genres of biography, memoir, and novel, delving into the complexities of family, identity, and reconciliation of memories.

Set against the cultural backdrop of 1920s to 1970s Queensland, this biographical novel is a poignant exploration of one man's tumultuous life and its profound impact on those around him - but especially on his youngest son.

Graham Leo masterfully intertwines the lives of father and son, navigating themes of religion, war, family turmoil, in the timeless quest for finding out the writer's own personal identity. Our Common Life spans three generations, offering readers a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of a family shaped by love, conflict, loss, and resilience.

Leo's prose captivates with a literary flair reminiscent of classical novels, drawing on a wide range of literary references from the ancient classics to modern writers. Through vivid storytelling and intimate reflection, he invites readers to embark on a journey of their own self-discovery, both through laughter and tears.

This is not just a story-it's an invitation to explore the complexities of human relationships, to confront the ghosts of the past, and eventually to find peace in the bonds of family that sometimes constrict as much as they are essential. Our Common Life is a testament to the power of personal storytelling. It is in our shared human experiences that we find the essence of what it means to be truly human.
