From Foreword: Possibly you have heard that Basil Wolverton's brain is so small that he uses a pencil sharpener to cut his hair. That's not true. He simply sets fire to his head once a week. Besides, his brain isn't as small as it looks through that glass container of preserving fluid, which makes the contents appear greatly reduced. Because of Wolverton's preoccupation with ghastly-humorous cartoons, he is often asked if he has bad dreams. He does. Some of them are plotless, out of focus and poorly cast. For years he was troubled by the reoccurring nightmare of his wife kicking him in the noggin. The nightmares ended when I, his psychiatrist, found a removed a sharp bedspring sticking through the head area of his mattress. Others ask what Wolverton is really like down deep. Down deep he has a lot of gastric juice, the start of some dandy ulcers and some grotesquely formed gallstones. In other deep respects, he is kind to non-biting insects. He abhors invaders from space. He flees from storm window salesmen. How does he know so much about how lushes look? "When I was a small boy my family lived next to a saloon," he disclosed. "I used to sit out in front on the curb and sketch drunks tossed out into the gutter, but I became discouraged because my grandmother kept being tossed out so often to splash mud on my shirt. The green mud clashed with the born gravy stains there. I had to start eating at a restaurant that had green gravy." Wolverton survived World Wars I and II by camouflaging himself with that same shirt. The draft boards never thought to look for him inside it. His present concern is to sit under his favorite wet rock to avoid World War III. Illustrated, Americana, American Culture, Bar Culture, Alcohol, Caricature, Cartoon, Art.
