Common Words of the Gospels

Many passages in the Gospels appear in more than one account, often using the same or closely related words. All four evangelists describe the major events of Jesus' life in similar language. This book focuses on these parallel passages and examines their similarities at the level of individual words. In particular, it highlights words that occur three or more times across the Gospel texts.

The book is similar to a Gospel synopsis or Gospel parallel. It not only places corresponding passages side by side, but also identifies their similarities word by word.

When three or more evangelists independently choose the same or similar wording, those words were likely considered important. Consistent wording across multiple accounts suggests particular significance.

These shared and repeated words form the core message of the Gospels. Their repetition draws attention and guides readers toward what the evangelists present as central to understanding Jesus.

By concentrating on these recurring words, we gain a new, more literal way of reading the Gospels. Giving special attention to the words common to multiple accounts helps us focus with confidence on the essential message of Jesus.
