The Community of We

Community. If we were to begin speculating all the communications that could be extracted from such a word, what would we arrive with? Common Unity? Communication of Unity? There is so much that we could speculate and extrapolate from one word in the English language. Yet, in the basic form, community is a collection of communities beginning with family and familiar people. Such is the same as the Bible speaks of communities. We are not to take away from community, but add value to it in the form of being the conduits for the Kingdom of God on earth. Whenever God needs something accomplished in the earth, He uses people that make up communities. Alas, we should live in "The Community of We"

It was December 2014 when I received a call in my office from Dr. Ernest T. Davis. At that time, I was the Director of Young People's Ministry for my former denomination. In the afternoon of the upcoming annual youth rally in Ocean City Maryland we were opening up a concert to the public. Headlining that concert was Israel Houghton and the New Breed. Dr. Davis asked about the cost and if the venue was wheelchair accessible since he was just coming through surgery which required him to be wheelchair. We worked out all the details and I asked him to make sure that he asked for me at the concert so I could meet him and his lovely in person, thank them for coming, and praise the Lord for bringing them safely into the community that gathered for this event. I thank God for that call.

Little did I know that God was working out a wonderful friendship and brotherhood behind the scenes even before I met Dr. Davis. He told me how he had been praying for me after reading what works God was using me to perform; that of reconciliation and revival. WE both realized this when WE met. Every time that WE get together (mostly over a meal at the Smyrna Diner or soon to be meal at Jazzy Jays Soul Food) WE get some kind of Holy Ghost anointing and celebrate all the amazing things that God is doing around us, through us and in SPITE of us. WE catch a glimpse of the Kingdom of God through "The Community of WE." The Christ is there with us every time WE share an email, have a conversation through text, or break bread together. I absolutely love Ernest and his passion for sharing the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in many profound, prophetic, and purposeful ways. He never goes it alone but gathers a Community of WE as a reflection of that Kingdom which is here but also not yet.

I have always been a team player. Many people have actually called me a bridge builder (especially between church folk who think they got it right but continue to be the most segregated society in the world today). If I have those qualities or gifts it is only through the grace of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost. Maybe this is why Ernest and I were drawn to each other, so that we may be an example to the community around us that it is not about individual accomplishments. But, despite our individuality WE are called to be so much more. I have read Dr. Davis' book "The Community of We" in its entirety and several times I had to clear my eyes from the swelling of tears because these words express the passion that is on my heart for the Church to be the Bride that Christ's calls it to be... "The Community of We."

May the Spirit of the Living God fall afresh on all of us as we read these words, that WE think less of ourselves and more about Christ in the community around us.
