This workbook, intended for use with The Community Interpreter Training Manual (5th ed.), includes over 40 role plays (many of them translated into Spanish) as well as other activities and group exercises that provide hands-on experience for skills development and a deeper understanding of ethics, standards and professional conduct in community interpreting. Activities in this workbook fall into four broad categories: 1. Role plays 2. Skills-building exercises 3. Case studies 4. General small-group activities Role plays and skills-building exercises cover three core sectors of community interpreting: 1. Medical interpreting 2. Education interpreting (e.g. K-12 schools, Head Start, community colleges) 3. Human and social services Although designed for use with a 40-hour foundation program, there is enough material in this workbook to support a longer curriculum of 60 hours. Many exercises are labeled by sector so that instructors may focus on one sector of community interpreting. Activities may also be given as homework assignments and discussed in class or used for in-services and continuing education programs. An appendix contains supplementary role plays that can be selected at the instructor's discretion to address the needs of a particular group or a particular sector of community interpreting. This is an invaluable resource for new interpreters, more experienced professionals and interpreter trainers.
