Wace, F.B.A., Litt.D., perhaps did more than any other man since Schliemann to enlarge our knowledge of Mycenaean Greece, the heroic Greece of the Homeric epics. His work in classical archaeology covered many varied fields, and his knowledge of Greece ranged over mediaeval and modern times as well as the classical period. He was sometime Director of the British School at Athens and it is by his work as excavator of Mycenae, which he began in the 1920 s, that he will always be best known.
