This is a paperback of a one-volume introduction to the history of Russian art and architecture from medieval times to the 1970s. Robin Millner-Gulland focuses on Old Russia down to the mid-nineteenth century, stressing some of the important discoveries made since the last war about methods of building in the Middle Ages. John Bowlt writes on the period from 1860 to the present day and highlights that socialist realism was by no means been the only form of expression produced during the half century before 1981, when this book was first published. Each chapter is fully illustrated and care has been taken to provide visual references to the principal artistic and architectural movements discussed in the text, as well as transliterations of Russian text for the non-specialist reader.
