The Comparative Coincidence of Reason and Scripture

"The Comparative Coincidence Of Reason And Scripture". This dense, three-volume theological work examines how the doctrine of Christ's atonement should be understood within a rational, scriptural framework. It argues against deistic views that mercy is satisfied by the suffering of an innocent, instead grounding salvation in the righteousness of Christ and the moral weight of Scripture. The author traces the arc from Mosaic sacrifices and typology to the final sacrifice of Jesus, explaining how the blood of Christ accomplishes forgiveness not by arbitrary divine displeasure, but through moral transformation and divine mercy. The treatise canvasses biblical narratives—from the crucifixion before Pilate and the Sanhedrin to the prophetic visions of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel—alongside New Testament revelations about the Messiah, the Melchisedek priesthood, and the supersession of the old covenant. It also contemplates the fate of animal creation and ends with exhortations toward faith, virtue, and a rational understanding of Scripture. Published in 1832 by J. Hatchard and Son (London).
