City of Washington: Thompson and Homans, 1832. Federalism in the Early Republic: A Rare 1832 Comparative View of State and Federal Constitutions Smith, William L. [1758-1812]. Davis, E.S., Editor. A Comparative View of the Constitutions of the Several States with Each Other, And with that of the United States: Presenting the Most Prominent Features of Each Constitution. Revised and Extended. City of Washington: Published by Thompson and Homans, 1832. 109, [5], 111-135, [1] pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/4"). Original quarter cloth over plain boards, printed paper label to spine. Light soiling to exterior, moderate rubbing to extremities, fading to spine, light wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, hinges cracked, front free endpaper lacking. Moderate toning and foxing to interior. $450. * Second and final edition. Published in 1832, the peak of the Nullification Crisis, this book was a direct response to the threat of secession. The editor's dedication is a fierce defense of the Union, warning that 'State rights' were becoming 'incompatible' with the federal system. First published in 1796, this work contains the complete texts of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, along with summaries of the state constitutions. This was the definitive map of American law at the time providing a unique side-by-side analysis of how the original states adapted federal principles to their own local needs representing the very birth of comparative constitutionalism in America. Cohen notes: "According to Sabin, this edition has been revised to such an extent that it is almost a different work from the earlier one." The second edition is scarce. OCLC locates 7 copies in law libraries (New York State Appellate Division, Yale, U.S. Supreme Court, Harvard, Ohio State University, Jenkins Law Library, Southern Methodist University).
