About this Item

29 x 13 xm. Two volumes in four parts with six title pages as follows: Preface (1743), Part I (1744), Part II (1737), Part III (1743), Part IV (1742-1743). With the continuation leaf for Part III of the second section, errata, and an Index for the Whole after Part IV. Text covers Mechanics, Hydrostatics and Pneumatics, Optics, and Astronomy. A total of 41 copper-engraved fold-out plates -- Vol. I (9), Vol. II (4), Vol. III (15), Vol. IV (13). Rowning, Rector of Anderby, Lincolnshire, and a Fellow of Magdelene College, Cambridge, developed the first mechanical device for solving polynomial equations. Although the machine works for any degree in theory, it was only practical for quadratics. ALLIBONE, Vol.II, p.1885. Raised bands, spine panels decorated in gilt, spine labels lacking, minimal text toning, back cover joints cracked -- at middle of Vol. I and foot, Vol. II -- but firm. Overall, a clean, sound set. Contemporary full brown calf. Very good. 2 vols. Bookseller Inventory # 18196
