A Compendious View Of The Grounds Of Religion, Both Natural And Reveal'D: In Two Dissertations.. By Thomas Seaton Thomas Seaton argues that natural religion and Christian revelation rest on a common foundation and that natural religion cannot stand if Christianity is ill grounded. The work comprises two dissertations addressing the certainty of truth derived from sense and reason and the credibility of Gospel miracles, particularly in relation to the testimony of those who witnessed them. The First Dissertation contends that human certainty can be secured only if senses and judgment are trustworthy, and, if miracles testified to Christianity, then the gospel’s miracles may provide a firm ground for belief. The Second Dissertation challenges Natural Religion when detached from revealed truth, asserting that grounds for certainty must be sought in the Gospel and its miracles. Throughout, Seaton examines the reliability of human perception, the possibility of deception, and the necessity of evidence from witnesses—especially in cases of resurrection, healing, and other miraculous acts. The text also includes a section examining the credibility of the Jews at the time of Jesus and their witness to his life and miracles.
