The second volume of a two-volume compendium of scientific knowledge by Christian Wolff (1679-1754), a well-known German philosopher and scientist. In this volume he explains basic principles of astronomy, geography, chronology, gnomonics, pyrotechnics, military architecture, civil architecture and algebra. The copy contains a complete set of 24 fold-out plates with copper engravings related to astronomy, gnomonics and architecture. The title page features a woodcut vignette; other pages are decorated with headpieces, tailpieces and initials. The front endpaper and title page have old signatures of former owners (one of them is dated 1813). /// Leather binding with raised bands and coloured edges; hardback, 502 pp., 24 plates, 8° (11.5 x 17 cm), leather worn, rubbed and chipped, front board chipped, edges faded and rubbed, front endpapers, several plates and ca. 100 leaves chipped, worn and brownish along edges (text/engraving usually only slightly corrupted), 4 plates detached, some pages have small tears, smudges, ink stains or water stains, several pages have pen marginalia, condition: fair Book Language/s: Latin.
