An illustrated edition of The Complaint by Edward Young bound in contemporary diced calf. This book celebrates the work of Edward Young. It includes a short introductory preface focusing on Young's life and why he wrote Night Thoughts. Originally written in 1742. This edition was published in 1812. Night-Thoughts focuses on ideas of life, death and immortality. Isolation is a key theme. It asks the reader to think about why these issues are important. Written in blank verse this philosophical poem reflects Young's state of mind, through writing he was came to terms with his loss and bereavement. This copy includes an illustrated frontispiece and half title exploring key themes within the text. These illustrations are accompanied by words and phrases from the text. Bound in a green diced calf binding. Externally smart. Rubbing to the spine resulting in loss. Internally firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last pages but overall pages bright and clean. Leather label is missing from spine. Signed by author Edward Mangin on the title page, with his bookplate and a summary of Young's life and work written in sepia pen on the inside front board, adjacent to Mangin's etched bookplate.
